Welcome to the Massachusetts Broadband Institute! Our mission is to ensure that broadband, or high-speed access to the Internet, is available and affordable everywhere in Massachusetts. Broadband is critical to strengthening our economy, improving educational opportunities, and enhancing the delivery of health care, public safety, and other government services.
The Institute was created by legislation signed by Governor Deval Patrick in August 2008 and established as a new division within the Massachusetts Technology Collaborative. The legislature authorized $40 million in state bond financing for the Institute to invest in broadband infrastructure in partnership with the private sector, focusing on locations that currently lack broadband access. With the passage of $7.2 billion of federal broadband stimulus funding in February 2009, the Institute has also become the Commonwealth's point of contact to the competitive broadband grant programs being developed by the U.S. Department of Commerce, and the broadband loan programs administered by the U.S. Department of Agriculture.
